DeskPunch is an Employee Clocking and Status Tool.  It displays a list of employees and their current status.

Employees will...

  1. Select their own name
  2. Provide a password (when required)
  3. Optionally, enter a Note
  4. Create a Punch from one of the available options.

You can create as many DeskPunch Configurations as you want.  Each Configuration creates a unique ID and Key that are supplied in the URL which allows people or systems that have the ID and Key to open DeskPunch without any other credentials.

To activate DeskPunch, go to Setup > Desktop > DeskPunch and click Add.

Name: Give the configuration a name

Installation Required: Installation Required is used only with Silverlight.  It MUST be first run from Internet Explorer and then Installed as a Silverlight Out Of Browser Application.  This can be useful if you need to hide the DeskPunch URL.

Password Required: Select this option if you want your employees to enter a password each time they punch. This isn't very effective as a security measure, but it does prevent employees from accidentally punching the wrong name from the list.

Hide Employee Time: Select this option if you do not want employees' pay period hours displayed next to their names.

Punch Types Allowed:

Autopunch: This is the recommended option. Employees just get one button, and the system figures out whether that punch should be In, Out, Lunch, or Break.

Switch: Only used for companies which use job or work codes.

In/Out: This gives the employee an option to manually select IN or OUT. This can be handy for any employees whose schedules do not allow for Schedule assignment, but otherwise, just opens up the potential for mistakes which must be corrected by the supervisor.

Lunch: Same as In/Out, but for lunch punches.

Break: Same as In/Out, but for break punches.

Tracking Levels: If you want tracking level items assigned to punches entered from this DeskPunch configuration, you can select which one you'd like assigned. An appropriate option would be Location, to keep track of where the employee was punching in from.

Allow Edit: Gives the employees the option to choose the tracking level item to attach to their punch. This is a feature used for job or work codes.

Employee Filters: If you leave this blank, all employees in the company will be listed for this DeskPunch configuration. Otherwise, you can choose employees individually by name, or groups of employees using Tracking Levels.

Once your options are set and you've saved them, you will be presented with two URLs, a Silverlight (URL) option, and a HTML5 (URL V2) option. To copy either address to your clipboard, click the blue "copy to clipboard" link at the far right end. You can email this to yourself to make the next part easier, or you can write it down by hand and take it with you.

Go to your target computer, and enter the full address for your DeskPunch configuration. You may be prompted to install the Silverlight client. If so, click the button to install.

You'll be presented with a screen that looks similar to one of the following:

Silverlight:

HTML5

If you opt to use the HTML5 version (which might not be a bad idea, as Silverlight is going away), you will need to use some browser tricks to create a kiosk and obscure the URL, which an unscrupulous employee could use to clock in from somewhere else.

Below is a link for instructions on how to do this with a Google Chrome browser.
