Exceptions are most often caused by a missing punch, which the system detects through the use of Maximum Shift Length and the Start of Day setting on the Schedule rule assigned to the employee.

If you find that your settings are causing too many exceptions, there are two ways you can relax the threshold for the system to trigger an exception.

First, you can allow your employees to work longer by increasing the Maximum Shift Length. This can be found in the Company Settings page, which can be found under Settings in the HTML version, or by clicking on the company name in the Silverlight version.

Exceptions can also be generated by a violation of the Start of Day setting, which is a function of the Schedule rules. We do recommend you keep a Start of Day, as it is a valuable tool in catching missing punches. Unless your employees change shifts too often to make managing their schedules too much of a chore, or they do not work any sort of predictable hours, in which case you can remove the Start of Day setting by removing it from their assigned Schedule, or cloning the Schedule, removing the Start of Day, and assigning the new, open Schedule to them.

To do the latter, go to Setup >> Schedules (HTML) or Schedules, select the Schedule you wish to copy, and click "clone" down at the bottom. A copy of the Schedule will appear, "[Name of Original Schedule] (1)." Double-click on the copy, and change the name to something meaningful, perhaps "[Name of Original Schedule] - No Start of Day." Then remove the Start of Day setting, and Save.

To assign the new Schedule, go to Scheduling (HTML) or Employees >> [employee] >> Employment >> manage scheduling (blue link, middle of left side), and click "A" on the date from which you want the new Schedule to apply. Select the new Schedule, click OK, OK, then Save.
